Feature Wall Statement Design

Feature Wall Statement Design project by Painters of Geelong

Sarah and Tom Chen had recently moved into a beautifully designed modern home in Highton, but found that the all-white interior — while clean and fresh — lacked the warmth and personality they craved. They wanted to inject colour and character into their home without overwhelming the minimalist architecture, and feature walls were the perfect solution.

Our colour consultation service played a central role in this project. We spent time understanding the Chens' aesthetic preferences, the natural light in each room, and how they used each space. From there, we developed a cohesive colour strategy that would tie the whole home together while giving each room its own distinct character.

Problem

Every wall in the home was painted in the same flat white, which is common in new builds but can feel sterile and impersonal. The open-plan living areas lacked visual definition between zones, and the bedrooms felt cold and uninviting despite beautiful furnishings. Sarah and Tom had tried adding colour through artwork and soft furnishings, but the blank white canvas made everything feel disconnected. They wanted bold colour but were nervous about making the wrong choices.

Solution

We guided the Chens through a structured colour consultation process, presenting mood boards and large colour samples to help them visualise each feature wall before committing. Our approach ensured every colour choice worked both individually and as part of the whole home palette.

  1. Conducted an in-home colour consultation, assessing natural light, existing furnishings, and personal style preferences
  2. Created custom mood boards for each room showing how the proposed colours would work with their furniture and decor
  3. Painted large test patches on each wall so the Chens could live with the colours for 48 hours before final approval
  4. Applied a deep teal matte to the living room feature wall behind the sofa, creating a dramatic backdrop
  5. Painted the master bedroom headboard wall in a warm terracotta that transforms with the changing daylight
  6. Finished the study nook and dining area feature walls, then refreshed all surrounding walls in a soft warm white to ensure cohesion
Deep teal feature wall in living room

The deep teal living room feature wall adds dramatic depth while anchoring the open-plan space beautifully.

The transformation exceeded Sarah and Tom's expectations. Each room now has its own distinct atmosphere while the carefully chosen palette ensures the home feels connected and intentional. The deep teal in the living room has become the family's favourite element, creating a rich backdrop for their artwork and setting the tone for the entire ground floor. The project was completed in just two days, and the Chens have since recommended our colour consultation service to several friends looking to add personality to their own homes.
