Modern Living Room Refresh

Modern Living Room Refresh project by Painters of Geelong

The Anderson family came to us with a common challenge — a living room that had seen better days. The walls had yellowed over time, the ceiling showed signs of wear, and the overall space felt dated and uninspiring. They wanted a complete refresh that would bring their living room into the modern era while keeping it warm and inviting for family life.

Our team worked closely with the Andersons to develop a colour palette that would transform their space. We focused on contemporary neutral tones that would complement their existing furniture and flooring while creating a sense of openness and light.

Problem

The existing paint had yellowed significantly over 15 years, giving the room a tired and dingy appearance. Several areas showed uneven surfaces from previous DIY patch jobs, and the ceiling had minor water stains from an old leak that had since been repaired. The outdated cream colour scheme made the room feel smaller than it was, and the family was embarrassed to host guests.

Solution

We developed a comprehensive approach to bring this living room back to life, focusing on thorough preparation and premium materials to ensure a lasting result.

  1. Sanded and filled all uneven surfaces, cracks, and imperfections across walls and ceiling
  2. Applied a high-quality stain-blocking primer to the ceiling to prevent any old marks from bleeding through
  3. Applied two coats of premium matte emulsion in a warm grey-white across all walls
  4. Created a bold charcoal accent wall using a deep matte finish to anchor the room
  5. Repainted ceiling in crisp bright white to enhance the sense of space and light
  6. Finished all trims and skirting boards with durable semi-gloss for a clean, polished look
Living room feature wall detail

The charcoal feature wall creates a stunning focal point in the refreshed living room.

The transformation was remarkable. The Andersons were thrilled with how the neutral palette opened up the space while the charcoal feature wall added a sophisticated focal point. The entire project was completed within three days, with minimal disruption to the family's daily routine. Premium Dulux paints were used throughout to ensure the finish would maintain its beauty for years to come.
